What causes arm pain?
Arm pain can arise from a variety of causes, ranging from injuries to underlying medical conditions. One of the most common sources of arm pain is muscle strain or overuse injuries. Repetitive motions, heavy lifting, or sudden movements can cause muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the arm to become inflamed or damaged, leading to pain and discomfort.
Another major cause of arm pain is nerve-related issues. Conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, pinched nerves in the neck or shoulder, or thoracic outlet syndrome can compress or irritate nerves that travel down the arm, causing pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness. These nerve problems can result from poor posture, injury, or degenerative changes in the spine or joints.
Lastly, arm pain may also be linked to joint conditions such as arthritis or bursitis. Inflammation of the joints in the shoulder, elbow, or wrist can cause persistent pain, stiffness, and swelling. Understanding the cause of arm pain is essential for effective treatment and relief.

Types of arm pain
There are four main types of non-acute arm pain to be aware of.
Muscle or Soft Tissue Pain
This pain is often due to muscle strain, overuse or injury to tendons and ligaments. It usually feels like a dull ache or soreness and may worsen with movement or activity. Conditions like tendonitis or muscle cramps fall into this category.
Referred Pain
Sometimes, pain felt in the arm is actually caused by problems in other parts of the body, such as the heart (angina or heart attack) neck, or upper back. Referred pain can be confusing because it doesn’t originate in the arm itself but still causes discomfort there.
Nerve Pain
Often described as sharp, burning, tingling or numbness, nerve pain arises when nerves are compressed, irritated, or damaged. Examples include carpal tunnel syndrome, pinched nerves in the neck (cervical radiculopathy), or thoracic outlet syndrome.
Joint Pain
Pain originating from the joints, such as the shoulder, elbow or wrist can be caused by arthritis, bursitis or joint inflammation. This type of pain is often accompanied by stiffness, swelling or reduced range of motion.
