What causes back pain?

Neck pain can stem from a variety of causes, ranging from minor muscle strains to more serious medical conditions. One of the most common causes is poor posture, especially when using electronic devices or sitting at a desk for long periods. Sleeping in an awkward position or using an unsupportive pillow may also contribute to discomfort and stiffness.

Another frequent cause of neck pain is injury or trauma, such as whiplash from a car accident or a sports-related incident. These injuries often affect the soft tissues, including muscles, ligaments, and tendons, resulting in inflammation and pain.

Underlying health conditions can also contribute to neck pain. For instance, arthritis can lead to inflammation in the cervical joints, while infections or tumors, though less common, may also cause significant discomfort. Stress and anxiety can further exacerbate neck pain by causing muscles to tense up.

Types of back pain

Back pain can be categorised into several different types, depending on its origin, nature, and duration.

Mechanical Back Pain

Mechanical back pain is the most common type, caused by muscle or ligament strain, poor posture or injury. It usually worsens with movement and improves with rest. This pain can range from mild to sharp and often affects the lower back. Treatment typically includes rest, physical therapy and pain relief.

Inflammatory Back Pain

Inflammatory back pain is caused by autoimmune conditions and usually feels worse in the morning or after rest, improving with activity. It often includes stiffness and can last a long time. Early treatment helps manage symptoms and prevent damage.

Radicular Pain (Nerve Pain)

Radicular pain happens when a spinal nerve is compressed, often from a herniated disc. It causes sharp, shooting pain that radiates from the back into the arms or legs, sometimes with numbness or weakness. This pain often needs medical evaluation for proper treatment.

Traumatic Back Pain

Traumatic back pain comes from injuries like fractures or accidents and is usually sudden and severe. It may cause swelling or trouble moving and often needs prompt medical care and treatment.
