What causes foot pain?
Foot pain can stem from a wide variety of causes, ranging from acute injuries to chronic medical conditions. One of the most common sources of foot pain is overuse, which can lead to conditions like plantar fasciitis, stress fractures and tendonitis. Activities that involve prolonged standing, walking, or running especially on hard surfaces or with improper footwear can place excessive strain on the feet.
Structural issues in the feet, such as flat feet or high arches, are another significant cause of foot pain. These conditions can alter the way weight is distributed across the foot, putting pressure on certain areas and leading to pain over time.
Chronic health conditions and systemic diseases can also play a major role in foot pain. Arthritis, both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis often affects the joints in the feet, causing stiffness, swelling and pain.

Types of foot pain
Foot pain can be diagnosed categorised based on pain duration, nature and origin.
Heel Pain
Heel pain is among the most common types of foot pain and is often associated with conditions like plantar fasciitis, which involves inflammation of the ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot.
Top of the Foot Pain
Top of the foot pain may be due to extensor tendinitis, which inflames the tendons that lift the toes, or stress fractures from repetitive impact activities. Meanwhile, pain on the bottom of the foot can result from conditions like plantar fasciitis or fat pad atrophy.
Arch Pain
Pain in the arch of the foot can be caused by flat feet (fallen arches), which occur when the arch collapses, leading to strain and instability. Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) is another cause of arch pain, stemming from a weakened or damaged tendon.
Nerve-Related Pain
Some foot pain is nerve-related, such as peripheral neuropathy, a common complication of diabetes that causes tingling, burning, or numbness. Tarsal tunnel syndrome, caused by compression of the tibial nerve near the ankle, can also radiate pain through the foot.
Ball of Foot Pain (Metatarsalgia)
The ball of the foot, or forefoot, is prone to conditions such as metatarsalgia, which results from excessive pressure on the metatarsal bones.
