What causes hand pain?

Hand pain can arise from a variety of causes, ranging from acute injuries to chronic medical conditions. One of the most common sources of hand pain is overuse or repetitive motion, which can lead to conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. These issues often affect individuals who perform repetitive tasks such as typing, using tools or playing musical instruments.

Injuries and trauma are also frequent causes of hand pain. Sprains, fractures, dislocations and soft tissue injuries resulting from falls, accidents or sports can cause significant discomfort and limit hand function. In some cases, lingering pain persists long after the initial injury has healed, especially if the injury was severe or not properly treated.

Chronic medical conditions can also play a significant role in hand pain. Arthritis, including both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, is a leading cause of joint pain and stiffness in the hands.

Types of hand pain

Hand pain can be categorised into several different types, depending on its origin, nature and duration.

Joint pain

Joint-related discomfort being one of the most common types of hand pain. Conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis cause stiffness, swelling and aching in the finger and wrist joints.

Tendon and Soft Tissue Pain

Soft tissue and structural issues also contribute significantly to hand pain. Tendonitis, the inflammation of tendons, often affects the wrist and thumb, especially in conditions like De Quervain’s tenosynovitis.

Nerve-Related Pain

Carpal tunnel syndrome, caused by compression of the median nerve, results in numbness, tingling, or pain in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger.

Bone or Structural Pain

Bone or structural hand pain typically arises from injuries or abnormalities affecting the bones, joints or connective tissues within the hand and wrist.

Muscle and Overuse Pain

Muscle and overuse hand pain often develops from repetitive motions or prolonged activities that strain the muscles, tendons, and soft tissues of the hand and wrist. This type of pain is common in people who perform tasks such as typing, assembly line work, or frequent gripping and lifting.
