What causes neck pain?

Neck pain can stem from a variety of causes, ranging from minor muscle strains to more serious medical conditions. One of the most common causes is poor posture, especially when using electronic devices or sitting at a desk for long periods. Sleeping in an awkward position or using an unsupportive pillow may also contribute to discomfort and stiffness.

Another frequent cause of neck pain is injury or trauma, such as whiplash from a car accident or a sports-related incident. These injuries often affect the soft tissues, including muscles, ligaments, and tendons, resulting in inflammation and pain.

Underlying health conditions can also contribute to neck pain. For instance, arthritis can lead to inflammation in the cervical joints, while infections or tumors, though less common, may also cause significant discomfort. Stress and anxiety can further exacerbate neck pain by causing muscles to tense up.

Types of neck pain

Neck pain can be categorised into several different types, depending on its origin, nature, and duration.

Muscular neck pain

Typically results from overuse, strain, or poor posture. This type of pain is usually dull and achy, affecting the muscles and soft tissues in the neck and shoulders. It often improves with rest, stretching, or physical therapy.

Nerve-related neck pain

This occurs when a nerve in the neck becomes compressed or irritated, often due to a herniated disc or spinal stenosis. This pain may radiate down the arm and be accompanied by tingling, numbness, or weakness. It tends to be sharp, shooting, or burning in nature and may worsen with certain neck movements or positions.

Mechanical neck pain

This type of pain is caused by problems with the joints, discs, or vertebrae in the cervical spine, is another distinct type. Conditions like cervical spondylosis or facet joint arthritis fall under this category and may cause chronic discomfort, stiffness, or limited range of motion

Referred pain

Referred pain is where the sensation of pain originates in another area like the heart or jaw but is felt in the neck.
