Frequently asked questions
How do I arrange an appointment with Dr Dashfield?
Appointments can be arranged by contacting Susan on 07624335657. Please leave a message if she is unable to take your call. Alternatively send an email to susan@manxpainclinic.com
Do I need a referral letter from my GP?
A referral letter from your GP or another specialist involved in your care is helpful but not a necessity. Your insurance provider may insist on a GP referral however.
What do I need to bring to my clinic appointment?
Please bring a list of your current medications and any off-Island correspondence from other specialists you have seen that is relevant to the condition you are seeing Dr Dashfield for.
What can I expect at my first appointment?
You will be seen by Dr Dashfield, Consultant in Pain Medicine. The consultation is likely to last up to 45 minutes. You are welcome to bring somebody with you for the consultation if you wish. Dr Dashfield will take a detailed history, examine you in the presence of a chaperone and organise any necessary investigations if appropriate. He will explain what he thinks the cause of your presenting complaint is and the management plan and with your permission, communicate his findings and management plan to your GP. If onward referral is required, he will organise this for you if you wish.
If I need an injection as part of my treatment will I have this during my initial consultation?
Ultrasound guided injections can be undertaken during your initial consultation but X-ray guided procedures are not. If you do have an injection we advise that a responsible adult drives you home thereafter.
What anaesthetic is offered during injection procedures?
Procedures are performed under local anaesthetic to numb the skin and deeper tissues. Oral sedation can be provided by prior arrangement but intravenous sedation is not offered.
When can I go back to work after a procedure?
You can usually go back to work the following day.
Do I need to stop my blood thinners prior to a treatment injection?
Blood thinners need to be stopped before spinal epidural and nerve root block injections. Warfarin must be stopped for 5 days, clopidogrel (Grepid, Plavix), prasugrel (Effient) and ticagrelor (Brilanta) for 7 days before these treatments. rivaroxaban and apixaban for 2 days, dabigatran for 3 days. Aspirin does not need to be stopped.
Is there anything I should inform Dr Dashfield about before having an injection?
Any allergies, particularly iodine and latex and we always check a female’s pregnancy status prior to using X-ray.
Can I eat and drink before my pain management procedure?
You can eat and drink as normal.
Do you see insured patients?
Dr Dashfield is registered with all the major insurance companies. You need to ensure you have an authorisation from your insurers prior to your appointment.
Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?
X-ray guided procedures are always undertaken at the weekend
If I have any problems or concerns after my treatment/ injections, who should I contact?
Please contact Susan on 07624335657 or susan@manxpainclinic.com who will contact Dr Dashfield.
