What causes knee pain?

Knee pain can result from a wide variety of causes, ranging from acute injuries to long-term medical conditions. One of the most common sources of knee pain is injury, such as ligament tears, meniscus tears, dislocations or fractures. These types of injuries often occur during sports, physical activity, or accidents and can lead to swelling, instability and limited movement in the knee joint.

Another major contributor to knee pain is degenerative conditions, particularly osteoarthritis. This occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the bones in the knee gradually wears down over time, leading to pain, stiffness and reduced flexibility. Rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory joint diseases can also affect the knee, causing chronic pain and swelling.

Knee pain can also be caused by overuse. Activities that place repeated stress on the knee such as running, squatting or climbing stairs can lead to conditions like patellofemoral pain syndrome, tendinitis, or bursitis. Poor posture, improper footwear, or muscle imbalances can worsen the strain on the knee, making even everyday movements uncomfortable. Our treatments for knee pain can be very effective for those suffering with many types of conditions.

Types of knee pain

Knee pain can be diagnosed and categorised into several different types of pain.

Acute Pain

Acute knee pain comes on suddenly and is usually the result of an injury. This can include ligament injuries, often caused by twisting, or direct impact during sports. Meniscus tears, which occur when the cartilage in the knee is damaged, can also cause sharp pain and difficulty moving the joint.

Location-Specific Pain

Knee pain can be classified based on its location. Pain at the front of the knee (anterior) is often linked to patellofemoral pain syndrome or quadriceps tendinitis, especially in people who run or squat frequently. Inner knee pain may indicate an MCL injury or a medial meniscus tear, while outer knee pain could point to iliotibial (IT) band syndrome, commonly seen in runners.

Chronic Knee Pain

Chronic knee pain develops gradually over time and is often associated with long-term conditions. Osteoarthritis is one of the most common causes of chronic knee pain, leading to stiffness and a constant ache due to cartilage degeneration. Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition, can also affect the knee, causing inflammation, swelling and tenderness.
