What causes Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a complex chronic disorder characterised primarily by widespread musculoskeletal pain, but its exact cause remains unknown. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia results from a combination of genetic, environmental and neurological factors. One key aspect appears to be abnormal processing of pain signals in the brain and spinal cord, leading to heightened sensitivity to pain.

Genetics may also play a role in fibromyalgia, as the condition tends to run in families. Certain genes might make individuals more susceptible to developing fibromyalgia, especially when combined with environmental triggers. These triggers can include physical trauma, infections, surgery, or prolonged stress.

Additionally, other factors such as hormonal imbalances, sleep disturbances, and psychological stress may contribute to the onset and severity of fibromyalgia symptoms.

Types of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia can be categorised into several different types, depending on its origin, nature, and duration.

Classic fibromyalgia

One common form is classic fibromyalgia, which involves widespread musculoskeletal pain, tenderness, fatigue, sleep disturbances and cognitive difficulties often referred to as “fibro fog.” This is the most typical presentation seen in clinical practice.

Overlap fibromyalgia

Overlap fibromyalgia is where fibromyalgia occurs alongside other chronic conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), migraines, or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ). These overlapping symptoms can make diagnosis and management more challenging, as multiple conditions need to be addressed simultaneously.

Inflamatory fibromyalgia

Another variation is inflammatory fibromyalgia, where some patients exhibit mild signs of inflammation alongside the usual symptoms of fibromyalgia. This form can overlap with autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, which complicates diagnosis and treatment because symptoms from both conditions may intertwine.

Juvenile fibromyalgia

Juvenile fibromyalgia affects children and adolescents. While the symptoms are similar to adult fibromyalgia, juvenile fibromyalgia can have unique developmental and psychological impacts due to the patient’s age and stage of growth.
