Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections

An introduction to PRP injections

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections lead to tissue regeneration and stimulate healing.  The Manx Pain Clinic offers ultrasound guided PRP injections which promote tendon healing through increased production of collagen and proteoglycan.  Conditions where PRP Injections can be helpful are shoulder tendinopathies (rotator cuff including shoulder impingement), tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, medial and lateral collateral ligaments of the knee.

PRP Injections can also be helpful for osteoarthritis of the knee as it can provide an alternative to steroid injections and viscosupplementations by Hyaluronic acid injections. PRP Injections has a role in cartilage regeneration particularly in mild to moderate arthritis of the knee joint

Conditions best suited for PRP injections

In orthopedics and sports medicine, PRP is commonly used to manage chronic tendon and ligament injuries such as tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, Achilles tendinopathy, and patellar tendinitis (jumper’s knee). These injuries typically involve overuse and inflammation and PRP can help by stimulating tissue repair and reducing pain. It is also beneficial for muscle strains and tears, including injuries to the hamstrings or quadriceps, especially when standard rehabilitation alone is not sufficient.

PRP injections are also effective for treating muscle injuries, particularly in athletes or active individuals who experience strains or tears in major muscle groups such as the hamstrings, quadriceps or calves. These types of injuries can be slow to heal, especially when severe or recurrent, and PRP can help speed up the recovery process by delivering concentrated growth factors directly to the damaged tissue.

PRP has shown promising results in treating mild to moderate osteoarthritis, particularly in the knee, although it’s also used in the hip, shoulder, and ankle. By injecting PRP directly into the joint, it can reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and potentially slow cartilage degeneration.

Chronic heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis is another condition well-suited for PRP injections, especially when traditional treatments like rest, physical therapy, or corticosteroid injections have failed. Plantar fasciitis involves inflammation and micro-tears in the plantar fascia, the thick band of tissue running along the bottom of the foot which can cause persistent pain and discomfort.

How do PRP injections work?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections work by using the body’s own healing mechanisms to repair damaged tissues and reduce inflammation. The treatment involves drawing a small amount of the patient’s blood, processing it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and then injecting that concentrated plasma directly into the injured or affected area.

Platelets are rich in growth factors and healing proteins that play a key role in tissue regeneration. When injected, the PRP stimulates the body’s natural repair processes by:

  1. Promoting cell growth and tissue repair

  2. Reducing inflammation

  3. Increasing collagen production

  4. Enhancing blood supply to the affected area, supporting faster recovery.
